Highway Technician Senior

The Highway Technician Senior for the Bridges and Structures Bureau will work in a variety of bridge inspection capacities within the Bureau, including:

Assists bridge inspection teams in conducting bridge inspections that conform to the National Bridge Inspection Standards by operating an underbridge access unit. This underbridge access unit is a complex/ specialized piece of equipment commonly referred to as a “snooper”, which provides the means for the six statewide inspection teams and six District Bridge Repair Crews to access/inspect various elements of a bridge.  

The person selected must be able to assist the inspectors in the inspection of bridges and collection/assembly/ processing of bridge condition data obtained during the inspections, as needed.

Operate the truck/master controls of the snooper, while the inspectors or repair crews are in the “bucket” operating the boom controls.

Maintain the “snooper” by performing routine maintenance/safety related activities and scheduling it for periodic safety inspections at the DOT’s facilities and by the manufacturer.

In addition, the incumbent may be asked to operate snow removal equipment when maintenance garages need such assistance, which is primarily during significant storms.

Transportation Engineer Associate

The Transportation Engineer Associate will work in a variety of civil engineering capacities within the Bureau, including:

Assists licensed engineers to develop preliminary bridge and culvert plans in the preliminary section of the Bridges and Structures Bureau.  This includes performing hydrologic and hydraulic design and analysis of various types of less complex highway structures.  These highway structures include bridges and culverts.

Make inspections and write reports containing recommendations and estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.

Provide support to the supervising engineer for timely solutions to construction and maintenance problems involving hydraulic design, stream instability and drainage issues.

Review plans that are submitted by consulting engineers and outside agencies for approval to ensure projects meet hydraulic and design guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Professional Development – May work on special projects and/or for other offices/districts across the Department as assigned to gain experience beneficial to become eligible to sit for the Professional Engineer exam and gain Professional Engineering licensure.
